Wine and Cheese Night: The Easiest Way to Gather Your Neighbors

Some of my favorite events aren't milestone birthdays or big celebrations. They're a group of neighborhood friends, a kitchen island, and a very important question: why do wine and cheese go together so well?

But let's be honest. This night was never really about the cheese.

The Best Kind of Neighbors

You know the kind of neighborhood I'm talking about. The one where the kids pour out of houses and roam in a pack all summer. Where someone always has an extra seat in the carpool, an extra hotdog on the grill, and eyes on everyone's kids at once. Where you started as the people who happened to buy houses on the same street and somehow became the people who show up for each other.

The assignment was clear: swap the driveway happy hour for a night of wine and cheese. So for a couple of hours, the bus stop crew got to trade coffee mugs for wine glasses and learn something new together.

What They Learned (Besides the Fact That We Should Do This More Often)

Here's the mini lesson that kicked off the night. Wine is acidic with no fat, which leaves your taste buds with a dry or bitter sensation. Cheese is the opposite: low acid, high fat, smooth and rich. Put them together and you get balance. Wine and cheese aren't just a cute couple. They complete each other. (Sound like any neighbors you know?)

From there we put the classic pairing rules to the test. Old with bold. Like with like. Opposites attract. What grows together goes together. And my favorite to teach, because nobody believes it until they taste it: stinky loves sweet. Sweet port next to funky gorgonzola sounds like a dare. Half the room was skeptical. All of the room went back for seconds.

That's the magic of a pairing night with people who are comfortable together. Nobody pretends to taste something they don't. Somebody makes the joke everyone was thinking. And the "ohhh" moment when a pairing finally clicks is even better when it happens in a room full of friends who will absolutely bring it up at the next block party.

Community Tastes Better

I teach a lot about wine regions, and there's a pairing rule that applies here too: what grows together goes together. It's true for Sancerre and goat cheese. It's true for Rioja and Manchego. And it's true for people. Friendships that grow up on the same street, season after season, pair well with just about everything.

You don't need a fancy occasion to gather your people. A few wines, a few cheeses, and the neighbors you've been meaning to have over are more than enough.

Or invite me and I'll bring the wine, the glasses, and the fun facts. Wine + Food Pairing is one of my favorite tasting experiences to lead, whether it's cheese, chocolate, or yes, even popcorn. Girls’ night, couples night, or the whole cul-de-sac. Your kitchen island is the venue.

Let's plan your pairing night.

Enjoy life with a full glass!
